Nuvora, Inc. the maker of Salese™ Dry Mouth (Xerostomia) products announced today that Salese raises the oral pH from acidic to neutral within minutes of product use

Santa Clara, CA (November 30, 2009)

Nuvora, Inc., the developer and manufacturer of Salese dry mouth products announced today results for its pH clinical study in patients with radiation induced Xerostomia.  Data indicates that Salese starts to raise the oral pH from acidic levels to neutral levels after just minutes of product use.  In addition, data demonstrates that a neutral pH is maintained even after product use. The clinical study was conducted by Barry Shipman, DMD and Michael Samuels, MD at the Mount Sinai Medical Center.  Results were presented at the American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthetics (AAMP) meeting held in San Diego, CA, November 2009.

The single leg, no placebo controlled clinical study enrolled ten (10) patients.  7 patients were male and 3 female, between 49-84 years of age.  All had previously been treated with radiation therapy with or without adjunctive chemotherapy or surgery.  6 patients were categorized as having reduced salivary function and 4 were categorized as having lost salivary function.  Pre-treatment the salivary pH level was 5.77.  Once the Salese lozenge was introduced, the salivary pH level started to increase immediately reaching 6.24 after 10 minutes.  Within 30 minutes the average pH level was close to neutral at 6.67 (6.8 = neutral) and continued to increase reaching 7.46 at the end of the treatment period.  30 minutes post treatment the salivary pH level remained in the neutral zone at 7.52.

“The data clearly demonstrates the potential benefits of Salese”, said Jerry Gin, COO of Nuvora, Inc. “Especially among people with Dry Mouth low levels of pH is associated with an increase in cavities and oral infections.  Although, further studies are needed Salese may well prove to have significant and lasting oral care benefits for this population”.

About Dry Mouth (Xerostomia)

Dry Mouth is a common condition affecting about 70 million people in the US.  The condition is due to a decrease in the amount of saliva produced in the mouth.

Low pH is a prevailing side effect of Dry Mouth making the tooth more susceptible to demineralization (5.5pH – 6.8 pH) and dental decay (below 5.5 pH).  In addition, Dry Mouth may also cause significant oral discomfort, tooth loss, bad breath (halitosis) and candidasis.

Approx. 1,800 prescription and non-prescription medications, including pain medications, antacids, decongestants, antihistamines, antihypertensives, antidepressants and diuretics are known to cause Dry Mouth.  Certain disease and conditions such as Sjogren’s disease, Parkinsons’s, or Diabetes are also known to cause Dry Mouth.  In addition, radiation treatment, commonly used in patients with cancers of the head and neck often results in Dry Mouth as the most common side effect.

Dry Mouth is more widespread among women (41 million) vs. men (28 million).  Its prevalence increases with age and number of medications used.  About 25% of adults, aged 25-44 suffer from dry mouth, whereas over 40% of 65 years and older adults suffer from dry mouth.  28% of adults taking 1 medication suffer from dry mouth.  This increases to 43% for adults taking 4 medications and it increases to 61% for adults taking 6 medications.

About Salese™

Salese, formulated with patented SuRe™ technology, is a soft, long-lasting lozenge that slowly dissolves in the mouth providing a moist, comfortable mouth feel thus easing the discomfort associated with Dry Mouth.  Salese’s unique long-lasting properties compare to traditional dry mouth products like rinses, gums, or sprays which typically last only for minutes vs. an hour or more for Salese.

In addition to moisture retaining properties, Salese contains proven oral care ingredients such as essential oils, xylitol, calcium phosphate and zinc gluconate to inhibit bacteria growth, prevent or capture bad breath causing compounds, impede the formation of biofilm and help to achieve a balanced oral environment.  All of the ingredients in Salese are generally recognized as safe (GRAS).  Salese is sugar-free and alcohol-free.  Salese is available in three variants: Original Peppermint, Soothing Wintergreen, Sensitive Mild Lemon.
